The Month of Rajab and the Event of Mi‘raj an-Nabi ﷺ
The date and year of the Isra’ and Mi‘raj (the Night Journey and Ascension) are a matter of difference among historians and scholars of Seerah. One opinion is that it took place in the 12th year of Prophethood, on the 27th night of Rajab, when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was 51 years and 5 months old.
The seventh month of the Islamic calendar is Rajab al-Murajjab. Rajab is one of the four sacred months that Allah Almighty has declared to be months of sanctity. Allah says:
> “Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.” (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:36)
The Qur’an does not specify which months are sacred. Instead, the Prophet ﷺ explained them, and they are: Dhul-Qa‘dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram al-Haram, and Rajab al-Murajjab. From this, it becomes clear that without the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ, the Qur’an cannot be fully understood.
These four months are called Al-Ashhur al-Hurum (the Sacred Months). They are termed sacred because in them all acts that cause mischief, corruption, bloodshed, and disturbance of peace are strictly forbidden. Although fighting and conflict are forbidden in all months of the year, in these four months such actions are especially prohibited.
The sanctity and greatness of these months were recognized in previous divine laws as well. Even during the pre-Islamic period of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), these months were respected and held in honor.
